Simple Tooth Extractions – What to Expect

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-female-brunette

Severe decay, gum disease, abscesses, or root canal failure may result in teeth so badly damaged that your dentist can’t save them. In these cases, the only option is extraction. For a simple extraction, you will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area. If several teeth are to be removed at once, you may receive general anesthesia instead, so you will sleep through the procedure. After the tooth is extracted, your dentist may place small stitches to close the wound. Gently biting on cotton or a gauze pad can help stop any bleeding.

What to Do After a Dental Extraction

The following ten tips will help hasten recovery after a tooth extraction:

  1. Take prescription pain medications as directed.
  2. Apply a cold pack or ice to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling.
  3. After the first 24 hours have passed, rinse with warm, salty water several times each day.
  4. Replace gauze pads often.
  5. Avoid physical activity for a day or so; this will help prevent excess bleeding.
  6. Do not smoke or use tobacco.
  7. Eat soft foods for a few days. Solid foods can be added in gradually as tolerated.
  8. Do not rub the extraction site with your tongue.
  9. Brush your teeth carefully.
  10. Do not drink through a straw.

Preexisting Conditions and Tooth Extractions

Extractions and other dental procedures can sometimes release bacteria into the bloodstream and cause remote infections. You may need to take antibiotics if you have an increased risk of infection. If you have any of the following conditions, tell your dentist about them before treatment.

  • Heart problems such as mitral valve prolapse
  • Impaired immunity from HIV, diabetes, autoimmune diseases or chemotherapy
  • Recent surgeries or major illnesses
  • Manmade body parts such as artificial joints or heart valves

An Affordable Dentist Can Recommend the Best Treatment

Diseased teeth should be extracted as soon as possible so that infection doesn’t spread. Your missing tooth or teeth may be replaced by implants, dentures, or dental bridges, depending on your needs. Seek advice from a qualified, affordable dentist to determine the best course of treatment.
