Are Dental Implants Your Best Option?

Root canals, or endodontic treatments, can often save diseased teeth, but when this is not possible, extraction may be the only option left. Missing teeth can have a detrimental effect on your self-esteem and your ability to eat normally. They can also cause your other teeth to move or shift. If you have lost one or more teeth, you don’t have to settle for gaps in your smile. Affordable dental implants are a viable alternative for many people. Implants are inserted into the jaw and fuse with the living bone to create an anchor for the new crown. They can also hold implant dentures and bridges in place.

Dental Implants vs. Root Canals
It’s always preferable to save your teeth through root canals or other treatments when possible, since even the best dental implants aren’t the same as your natural teeth. However, when that’s not an option, a dental implant is an excellent alternative. The best candidates for dental implants have good overall health and oral hygiene and don’t smoke.

Placing Dental Implants
Dental implants don’t require procedures on adjacent teeth and they’re stable and reliable. While some can be placed in one day, many implant restorations take place over the course of several appointments. First, a titanium screw is inserted into your jaw and covered with gum tissue. It is allowed to fuse with your jawbone for several months before the abutment, an extension that holds the crown, is placed. In some cases, the implant and abutment are a single unit and only require one surgery. After a healing period, the dentist fashions a natural-looking permanent crown and cements it into place to complete the restoration.

All dentists receive some training in implant surgeries while in dental school, but depending on your needs, you may be referred to an endodontist, oral surgeon, or other specialists for evaluation and care.
